Choose the Rest You Need Today: Simple Ways to Rest When Life Is Busy

Rest does not always come easily. Even when we know we need it, slowing down can feel uncomfortable or nearly impossible.

For women, busy moms and entrepreneurs, there is often one more task to finish, one more person who needs something or one more decision waiting to be made. Rest gets pushed to the bottom of the list because it does not feel urgent. But after more than 16 years in business, I have learned that rest rarely appears on its own. It has to become a priority, even when it only happens in small pockets of time.

Rest does not have to mean taking an afternoon off or creating a perfect wellness routine. Sometimes five quiet minutes, a supported yoga pose or a short walk is enough to help you pause.

Why Is It So Hard to Rest?

Many of us measure our days by what we accomplish. Being busy can feel responsible, while resting can bring up guilt. This is especially common for women balancing work, parenting, caregiving and the invisible planning that keeps a household or business running.

Not everyone has hours of downtime available. We need a more realistic definition of rest. It can be intentional without being elaborate, and it can fit into real life.

In my newest Instagram Reel, I talk about making time for rest instead of waiting for it to happen. A busy mind may need something different than a tense body. Restlessness may need movement before stillness. Some days, the best choice is to lie down and do nothing.

What Kind of Rest Do You Need Today?

If Your Mind Feels Busy, Try Quiet Meditation

You do not need to clear your mind or meditate for 20 minutes. Find a comfortable seat, lower your gaze and notice your breathing. Thoughts will still come. The practice is simply giving your attention somewhere gentle to land.

A supportive meditation cushion or sit pillow can make sitting more comfortable. Choose a chair if that feels better. Comfort is allowed.

If Your Body Feels Tense, Try Supported Restorative Yoga

When your muscles are already tired, your yoga practice does not need to ask more of them. Try a supported forward fold, Child’s Pose or a reclined pose with a yoga bolster beneath you.

Yoga props help meet your body where it is. You should not have to strain to reach the floor or hold yourself in place. With steady support, it may be easier to stay for a few quiet breaths.

If You Feel Overstimulated, Reduce the Input

Sometimes rest is less about adding an activity and more about removing stimulation. Put your phone down. Lower the lights. Close your eyes or use a flax and lavender eye pillow to soften the light and create a cue that this is a moment to pause.

You do not need to turn your home into a spa. Work with the environment you have and reduce one source of noise, light or distraction.

If You Feel Restless, Move Before Becoming Still

Stillness is not always the best place to begin. If sitting quietly makes you feel more agitated, try a short walk, a few gentle stretches or slow movements that feel natural in your body.

Movement and rest are not opposites. Gentle movement can help you transition out of a busy day. Afterward, stillness may feel more accessible.

If You Feel Depleted, Let Yourself Do Less

Some days, you do not need another technique or routine. You need to lie down, get comfortable and stop asking yourself to be productive.

A bolster beneath your knees, a blanket or a weighted yoga sandbag can make rest feel more supported. The props are optional. The important part is giving yourself permission to pause without earning it first.

Small Moments of Rest Still Count

Rest may be two minutes of quiet before your family wakes up, ten minutes of restorative yoga after work or a screen-free cup of tea before bed. It may simply mean not filling every open moment with another task.

I am still learning this myself. Running Love My Mat for more than 16 years has taught me that there will always be more work. Rest does not arrive when the list is finished. It happens when we decide that our well-being deserves a place on it.

You do not need to overhaul your life today. Start by asking one simple question: What kind of rest do I need right now?

Then take the smallest available step toward it.

A reminder to choose the kind of rest your mind and body need today.
Thanks for being here and trying your best to rest.
